Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor

What is the LockDown Browser?

Respondus LockDown Browser is a secure browser that may be required while testing in Blackboard. Your instructor will inform you if it is required for an exam. The browser prevents printing, copying, and accessing other websites or applications during a test. It should only be used while completing Blackboard tests and does not need be used in other areas of Blackboard.

Watch this quick video introduction to Respondus LockDown Browser:

System Requirements

The following system requirements are needed to use Respondus. We update this information periodically as requirements change. Visit the Respondus site for complete system requirements.

Contact your instructor if you are unable to download the Browser due to technology requirements.

Operating System

Memory

  • Windows: 75 MB permanent space on the hard drive
  • Mac: 120 MB permanent space on the hard drive
  • Installing the Browser

If the LockDown Browser has already been installed, skip to the next section. If not, the LockDown Browser must be installed on the computer (Windows or Mac) being used to take a test.

Taking a Test

  1. Close all programs.
  2. Locate the LockDown Browser shortcut on the desktop and double-click it. (For Mac users, launch LockDown Browser from the Applications folder.)
  3. If prompted to close a blocked program (e.g. screen capture, instant messaging) choose Yes. Or, close LockDown Browser and close the blocked program before restarting.
  4. Log into the course, navigate to the test and select it.
  5. Begin the exam.
    • NOTE: Once a test has been started with Respondus LockDown Browser, you cannot exit until the Submit button is clicked.

Using with a WebCam (Respondus Monitor)

You may be required to use LockDown Browser with a webcam, which will record you during an online, nonproctored exam. (The webcam feature is sometimes referred to as Respondus Monitor.) Your computer must have:

  • A functioning webcam and microphone
  • A broadband connection

If a quiz requires LockDown Browser and a webcam, follow steps 1-5 in the previous Taking A Test section. At this point the Startup Sequence for the webcam begins.

  • You will first need to review and agree to the Terms of Use.
  • The Webcam Check will confirm that your webcam and microphone are working properly.
  • The remaining steps of the Startup Sequence will depend on settings chosen by your instructor. Follow the instructions and note your progress along the left side of the screen.

The test will begin after the Startup Sequence is complete. You cannot exit LockDown Browser until the quiz is submitted for grading.
