How to Use Discussions in Blackboard
Bb's discussion forums are pretty basic, but the interface can take a little getting used to.
This page will talk about where to find discussions and viewing tips, then how to participate in discussions.
Video Overview of Blackboard Discussions
The video below shows how to Create a Thread, post a Reply, and more.
Viewing Discussions
Navigate to the Discussion Forum
- In most classes, you can click the Discussion link in the course menu to open the list of forums.
- Look for discussion forums in the My Groups area at bottom of course menu if your discussion is a small group discussion.
Customize Forum View
- Toggle List View or Tree View at top right to customize your viewing experience.
- In Tree View, choose Expand All to see threads with replies.
Reading Discussion Posts and Replies
- To read multiple threads together, check the boxes to the left
- Click Collect
Participating in Discussions
Create a Thread
Often, your instructor will ask you to create an "initial post," or a post in which you reply directly to the discussion prompt. The most common way to do this is by using the Create Thread button, found at top left within the discussion forum.
- Navigate to the Discussions forum and click on the title of the desired discussion to enter the forum
- Click Create Thread at top left
- Add a Subject, then create your post in the editor area (labeled as "Message").
- Click Submit at bottom right to post your work.
Notes
- Blackboard does NOT save as you work. If you are going to write a lengthy post, you may want to type it in a word processor, then copy and paste it into the discussion.
- Students usually cannot edit or delete their posts once they have been submitted. Proofread your work before submitting.
Post a Reply
- Navigate to the Discussions forum and click on the title of the desired discussion to enter the forum
- Click on the subject of any thread to read it
- Click Reply below the content of the post to begin your reply
- Edit the Subject, if desired, then create your post in the editor area (labeled as "Message").
- Click Submit at bottom right to post your work.
Post Videos in Blackboard Discussions
You can also add media to your posts in Blackboard. In fact, many classes use videos instead of text in discussions. Learn more about options for using videos in Bb discussions.
